Living in San Angelo: The Oasis of West Texas

Goodfellow Air Force Base serves as San Angelo’s largest employer, anchoring the city’s economy and identity. The base provides intelligence training and fire protection instruction, bringing military personnel, civilian employees, and contractor workers to this West Texas city.

The military presence creates transient population alongside permanent residents—service members rotating through training assignments, families on multi-year postings, and veterans who remained in San Angelo after service. This military community understands housing flexibility and practical living choices, making RV living natural fit for families adapting to assignment changes and relocations.

For military families, RV living offers advantages traditional housing cannot match—mobility when orders arrive, avoiding expensive leases during temporary duty, and maintaining stable home environment despite frequent moves. The flexibility proves particularly valuable for those uncertain about assignment duration or planning transitions between postings.

Historic Fort Concho and Frontier Heritage

Fort Concho, established in 1867 as National Historic Landmark, ranks among the best-preserved frontier army posts in the United States. The fort famously housed Buffalo Soldiers—African American cavalry units who served on the frontier with distinction—and protected settlers during Texas’s dangerous early years.

The preserved fort buildings, museum exhibits, and living history programs celebrate military heritage and West Texas frontier history. For residents, Fort Concho provides cultural attraction and connection to the region’s past when San Angelo served as critical outpost in wild territory.

Originally founded as “Santa Angela” by Bartholomew DeWitt honoring his wife, the name changed to San Angelo in 1883 at U.S. Postal Service request for proper Spanish grammar. This quirky naming history adds character to the city’s identity and story

Outdoor Recreation

Lake Nasworthy provides boating and fishing recreation within easy distance of the city. The reservoir creates water recreation opportunities that draw residents and visitors seeking relief from West Texas heat and outdoor activities.

San Angelo State Park spans 7,500 acres and houses portion of the official Texas State Longhorn herd. The park offers hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing while celebrating Texas ranching heritage through the iconic longhorn cattle. For outdoor enthusiasts, the park provides extensive recreation without requiring long drives to more distant destinations.
