Living in Red Oak, Texas: From Possum Trot to the I-35 Corridor

Red Oak sits in northern Ellis County on Interstate 35E, about twenty miles south of Dallas. Roughly 20,000 people live here, up from 350 in 1950. It kept a small town center while the warehouse corridor grew up around it.

It Was Called Possum Trot

James E. Patton and his family settled on Red Oak Creek in 1844, and the first post office in the area opened in 1847. The settlement went by Possum Trot, after exactly what you would guess.

When Ellis County was created in 1849 the name changed to Red Oak, after the creek. Wheat was the main crop before the Civil War, and cotton took over in the 1860s.

The Town Moved to the Tracks

The Katy reached Red Oak in 1884, but the residents did not want train traffic running through the middle of their town, so the line was routed about a mile northwest of it.

The road was finished in 1890, linking Red Oak to Dallas and Waco, and over the following years the town gradually picked up and moved to center on the railroad instead. Fires in 1909 and again in 1919 did heavy damage, and the town finally incorporated in 1949.

Commuters, Then Warehouses

By the late twentieth century farming was no longer the point. Most people here worked in Dallas or Fort Worth and drove home, which is still true for a lot of households.
