Living in Midlothian, Texas: The Cement Capital of Texas

Midlothian sits in the northwest corner of Ellis County, about thirty miles southwest of Dallas on US 67. Roughly 47,000 people live here now, up from about 7,500 at the turn of the century. It is one of the fastest growing towns in North Texas and still has three of the largest cement plants in the country inside the city limits.

Hawkins’ Springs, Then Barker, Then Midlothian

Settlers reached this area early, but permanent land titles did not come until 1848, when the Hawkins and Newton families took the first ones under the Peters colony. The settlement went by Hawkins’ Springs, then got a post office named Barker in 1877.

The name changed to Midlothian around 1883, most likely after the Scottish county, suggested by a train engineer. The Santa Fe laid track here the same year and the town incorporated in 1888.

Cotton First, Then Cement

By 1892 there were more than twenty five businesses here, mostly gins and general stores. The Midlothian Oil Mill and Gin opened in 1898 and grew into a fourteen gin operation at its peak.

The limestone underneath turned out to be worth more than the cotton on top. By the 1980s the town was calling itself the Cement Capital of Texas, and three of the ten largest cement plants in the United States still run here, under Martin Marietta, Holcim and Ash Grove.

Heavy Industry Next to New Subdivisions

Gerdau runs a steel mill here that is one of the largest private employers in town, and QuikTrip and other distributors have built along the highway. That is a lot of industrial payroll for a town this size.
