Longview is the Gregg County seat, sitting on Interstate 20 in East Texas about 125 miles east of Dallas. Roughly 83,000 people live here. The railroads put it on the map and the largest oil field in the lower forty eight made it what it is.

The International-Great Northern and the Texas and Pacific had both built through this area by 1872. The legislature carved Gregg County out of southern Upshur County in April of 1873 and named it for John B. Gregg, with Longview as the county seat.

Then 1931 Happened

The county poured the money into courthouses, roads, schools and a hospital, and the state built a highway running the twelve miles from Longview over to Kilgore. The field remade this corner of Texas in a single year.
