Living in Lancaster, Texas: One of the Oldest Towns in Dallas County

Lancaster sits in southern Dallas County, about fourteen miles south of downtown Dallas. Roughly 41,000 people live here. It is one of the oldest settlements in the county, laid out in the 1850s, and it is now in the middle of one of the largest warehouse and distribution corridors in Texas.

Roderick Rawlins had settled here by 1845. Abram Bledsoe bought half of the Rawlins survey in 1847 and laid out a town near Pleasant Run around 1852, naming it after his birthplace, Lancaster, Kentucky.

A carding machine was running by 1850, Dr. H. J. Moffett opened a drugstore and a practice in 1851, and the post office came in 1860. The town incorporated in May of 1887 with about 550 people.

The Pistol Factory

During the Civil War a factory in Lancaster turned out the Tucker and Sherrod revolver, a copy of the .44 caliber Colt Dragoon, for Texas troops. An engraver named R. P. Henry worked the line there and opened a general store in town after the war.

Rail came next. The Dallas and Waco was built through here in 1888 and became part of the Katy in 1891, the Lancaster Tap connected the town to Hutchins in 1890, and the interurban ran to Waco by 1911.

Now It Moves Freight

For most of the twentieth century this was a mill and gin town, then a printing and cotton oil town. By 1970 there were 135 businesses here making building materials, furniture and chemical products, and 290 by 1990.

What drives it today is freight. Southern Dallas County has become an inland port, and the warehouses along the interstate corridors run shifts around the clock. A lot of Lancaster works in a building with a loading dock.
