Killeen sits in Bell County in Central Texas, about an hour north of Austin and right up against Fort Hood. Roughly 162,000 people live here, which makes it one of the larger cities in the state, and the post next door is the reason for nearly all of that growth.

A Railroad Town Before It Was an Army Town

The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe bought land here in 1881 and laid out a town named for a railroad official, Frank P. Killeen. The first train pulled in during May of 1882.

For the next sixty years it was a shipping point for cotton, wool and grain, with gristmills, gins, banks and stores around the depot. By 1900 there were about 780 people living here, and by 1940 still only about 1,263.

Camp Hood was created in 1942 to train soldiers for the war, and it became Fort Hood in 1950. The post brought a rush of workers, soldiers and families to a town of barely a thousand people, and a housing shortage showed up almost immediately.
