Living in Jal, New Mexico: The Town the JAL Brand Named

Jal sits in the far southeast corner of New Mexico in Lea County, close enough to the Texas line that you can see it from town. It is the southeasternmost city in the state. For a place this small it has one of the more remarkable histories in the Permian, and almost all of it is about two things: water and gas.

The Brand Came Before the Town

This country was hard to settle because there was almost no surface water. Around 1883 the Cowden Brothers of Texas brought cattle in and bought the herd along with the rights to the JAL brand from a man named James Alonzo Edwards. The brand was large enough that the cattle were known as the JALs and the cowboys as the JAL Outfit. The Cowdens dug wells across the range, Muleshoe Wells among them.

A merchant named Charles Justis applied for a post office and the name Jal was chosen. It opened in 1913 about six miles east of where the town stands now.

Then the Drought, Then the Oil

A drought in 1916 pushed Justis to move the store and the post office to Muleshoe Wells, and that is where the present town started. The water decided it.

Oil was discovered in 1926 and Jal turned into a boomtown that briefly held close to nine thousand people. In 1927 H. G. Frost and Paul Kayser founded the El Paso Natural Gas Company here to pipe gas to El Paso, and the headquarters sat just south of town.

Boom, Bust, Boom

Those pipelines earned Jal a nickname as the gas capital of the world, and the town ran somewhere around three thousand people through the El Paso Natural Gas years. The 1980s downturn cut it to roughly eighteen hundred. Later booms brought people back.

What is here now is the Woolworth Community Library, Jal Lake Park and a metal sculpture called The Trail Ahead that honors the ranching this town is named after. The schools punch above their weight, and the golfer Kathy Whitworth came out of them.
