Burleson started in 1881 when the Missouri, Kansas and Texas planned a line from Fort Worth to Hillsboro and put a depot on land bought from Reverend Henry Renfro. Renfro named it for his old teacher, Dr. Rufus Burleson, later president of Baylor. It straddles northern Johnson County and southern Tarrant County with about 57,000 people.

Burleson had two hundred residents in 1890 and fewer than eight hundred by 1950. Then Fort Worth came south. The town hit 7,713 by 1970, 16,113 by 1990, better than 36,000 by 2010 and has nearly doubled again since.
