Azle goes back to 1846, when Dr. James Azle Steward moved into a cabin somebody else had built and later gave the land for a townsite. The post office opened in 1881 under a different name and was renamed for him. About 15,000 people live here now, in northwest Tarrant County with a foot in Parker County.

Before the highway there was wheat, corn, peanuts, sorghum and cotton, plus melons, orchard fruit and dairy herds selling cream into Fort Worth. State Highway 199 reached Azle from the city by 1933 and the farms started turning into neighborhoods after that.
