Living in Kilgore, Texas: The Town That Sat on Top of the Field

Kilgore sits in Gregg County and spills over into Rusk County, right on Interstate 20 in East Texas. Roughly 13,500 people live here. The town sits close to the center of the East Texas oil field, which is the largest oil reservoir in the lower forty eight states, and that is not ancient history here.

The Field

The discovery well, the Daisy Bradford No. 3, was completed in Rusk County in October of 1930 and came in at about 300 barrels a day. Columbus Marion Joiner, known as Dad Joiner, had drilled it on borrowed money and oversold shares to pay for it. H. L. Hunt bought his leases for $1,335,000.

The field turned out to cover about 140,000 acres across five counties. Better than 30,000 wells have been drilled into it and it has produced close to 5.2 billion barrels.

Wells in the Front Yard

Kilgore became the center of the leasing boom. Leases went for $1,800 to $3,000 an acre, derricks went up in people’s yards, and at one point a single city block held forty four producing wells.

By mid 1931 the field was making about 900,000 barrels a day off roughly 1,200 wells, and the price of crude collapsed to thirteen cents a barrel. The governor sent the National Guard and the Rangers in that August to shut the wells in.

Still an Oil Town, Plus a Few Other Things

There are still better than a thousand producing wells inside the Kilgore city limits, and oilfield service work is still a real part of the payroll here.

Manufacturing carries a lot of the rest. Camfil, Closure Systems International, Communications and Power Industries and Skeeter Boats all run operations here, and Martin Midstream is headquartered in town. Kilgore College anchors the middle of it, and the Rangerettes have been a Kilgore institution for generations.
