Granbury was settled in the 1850s by mostly Tennessee emigrants who crossed the Brazos, and the Nutt brothers donated forty acres of riverfront for the townsite in 1866. It is the Hood County seat, named for General Hiram Granbury, and the limestone courthouse square at the center of it is one of the best preserved in Texas.

Thirty Nine Limestone Buildings and a Clock Tower

The first two courthouses burned. The replacement went up in Brazos limestone with a lighted clock tower, and thirty nine historic buildings still ring the square around it, most of them two stories of the same stone.

The Fort Worth and Rio Grande reached town in 1887 and the old red brick depot is a museum now. The Opera House dates to 1886 and still puts on shows.

The dam at De Cordova Bend was finished in 1969 and Lake Granbury filled in behind it. Marinas and shopping centers followed, and the town went from 2,473 people in 1970 to better than 13,000 today.

Then Comanche Peak went up in the 1980s and brought thousands of construction workers into Hood and Somervell counties. The plant still anchors a lot of skilled trade employment in the area.
